Mangwashi Phiyega was appointed South Africa's first woman police commissioner |
President Jacob had fired Bheki Cele and appointed Mangwashi Phiyega to replace him, making her South Africa's first National Commissioner.
Phiyega is current chairperson of the Presidential Review Committee.
She has a Masters degree in social sciences, and previously served as Absa chairperson and worked for the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) task team.
Zuma made the announce to reporters at the Union Building in Pretoria that he had "decided to release General Cele of his duties."
Cele's dismissal comes amid growing frustration in the over escalating corruption in the country just a board of inquiry last month found him unfit to hold office due to last year's allegations of unlawful property deals. The board recommended he be dismissed.
With SA's new top cop named and old one fired, we went around the Soshanguve and asked studunts and the community what do they thought of today's development in the National Commissioner post. This is what they had to say.
