SCHOOLS COMPETE AGAINST EACH OTHER

Sibusiso Banda

Sixteen primary schools from around Soshanguve competed against each other in the Cluster Athletics Championships competition of District 15 held on Thursday at the Giant stadium.

The aim was to select the best athletes to represent the Soshanguve District at an athletics meeting at the Tshwane University of Technology's Pretoria west campus this Friday, 17 February.

They will be participating against the Mabopane Cluster

Florence Moela, the event organizer from the Soshanguve committee of athletics said the event not only helps in developing and motivating pupils to take part in sport, but it also helps unearth new talent.

She also urged the community’s support for the athletes.

“We would like the community, especially the parents of the athletes participating in the event, to support them not only in school, but also with their afternoon training.”

Kamokgelo Malema from Gontse Primary school in Extension 10, took first place in the boys 1500 metres. He said his winning was due to his strategy.

“I decided not to sprint in the beginning of the race. I only did in the end because I wanted to reserve my energy for the last few meters of the race.”
