The Cape Town fever had already taken its course months before the actual trip day. Self -branded colourful t-shirts were already designed and printed. Everywhere you went “Cape Town” was the trending word in various student’s social circles.
As part of their academics, second year journalism students from the Tshwane University of Technology went on a five day educational trip to the Mother City.
This year’s trip comprised of 79 students, two head lectures and two student assistance.
With the facebook group had been created almost a year ago, the excitement and atmosphere leading up to the tips day had already reached its peak on the 7th of September.
According to the trip’s programme, Robben Island, SABC, and Parliament were some of the places that students were scheduled to visit.
One of the students and founder of the Cape Town facebook group, Khuliso Nemarimela said he couldn’t believe they are finally going.
“It hit me last night while I was packing my bags that the countdown is over. I am finally going to see the beach,” He said.
Sadly though, the excitement took a bit of a turn before the trip’s journey even started. Karabo Tebele, was among those who were impatient. He expressed his frustration as the buses were two hours late.
“We waited and waited. By the time they arrived I was very tired of standing. But that was nothing compared to the 18 hours we spent on the road. It was like we are heading to another country. Everyone was happy when we reached it. ” he said.
On the day of arrival, the student where schedule to visit Robben island.
“I was a bit tied when we arrived. I did not sleep in bus the excitement of heading to Cape Town was then taking its toll on me. Nonetheless, the Amalfi (the hotel) is beautiful. So far the best I have ever been in” said Caroline Masonganye.
Due to the trip’s tiredness, she said she slept on the boat while they were heading to the Island. She said he did so to try and “restore energy for the beach later that day.”
Coordinator of the trip and TUT lecturer, Tshanamo Makhadi express joy over the students behaviour.
“This was the best group so far. They were well behaved and certainly posing a lot of questions about the places we ahd visited.” he added.
