Social re-shapes Journalism

Sibusiso Banda

Social media has great influence the way journalism is practised. The advent of virtual worlds like blogs, facebook, twitter and other social network sites has been heralded as ushering in a change in worldwide distribution while also make communication instantaneous.

Opportunities for journalists to connect with the public have opened up on an unprecedented level. Resulting in change in the way a story is told and consumed. As social media has enabled instant news consumption. Created a public demand for every minute news.

Journalist such as Talkradio 702’s Mandy Wiener, Safm’s Siki Mgabadeli and Aneeqah Emeran are always online keeping up to date with the lasted trends or even news that they are busy working on. As according toRobert Quigley through social networks, the public wants, and expects, to be able to have a conversation with just about anyone at anytime.

Despite social media making a positive impact in the news profession, it has also showed its negative head. What some call “arm chair” journalism, where the reporter, instead of going out in the field, they sits all day on a computer in search of news) has taken the industry by storm.

Radio stations are among those that are being accused of practising it. There have been public complains of radio news rooms taking stories and presenting them as they are without even re-writing them into the mediums’ format.
Social media has simplified and placed journalism on a tight leash as the public is now the media’s watch dogs.
