South Africa will see a new player in the television content and broadcasting market when SouthTel VOD:TV launches on 1 September, reports TechCentral.
The video on demand (VOD) service will be launched by telecommunications company SouthTel in conjunction with partners, and already has the necessary licence from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa.
VOD:TV will offer push-based VOD services similar to the US-based Netflix, but will deliver the content, including series and the latest movies, over satellite to personal video recorders (PVRs). According to TechCentral MultiChoice is rumoured to be planning the launch of a VOD service called Box Office this year, which will also offer the latest movies and other content before it is distributed to conventional broadcasters
